AMD Ryzen memory optimisation – The effect of tRC timings

AMD Ryzen memory optimisation trick

Performance testing and methodology

With our R7 1700X and several different DDR4 memory kits, we found that we were able to reduce our memory’s tRC timings without causing system instability. This means that Ryzen users have the potential to gain free performance by overclocking their memory beyond the capabilities that are available at DCOP/Auto settings.

To test the performance impact of this we will use a dual channel kit of G.Skill 3200MHz memory and run it at 2666MHz and 3200MHz using “stock” and “enhanced” timings.

At both memory speeds, we will be using 14-14-14-34 memory timings and we will test each speed’s stock tRC timings and our adjusted tRC timings of 48 (14+34).

When running our memory at 3200MHz moving from a tRC timing of 75 to 48 we see a 36% reduction. When running memory at 2666MHz, moving from the tRC stock value of 63 to 48 will represent a 24% reduction.

Will this minor change have a notable performance impact? Let’s find out!
