ASUS Z270-A Prime Review

Conclusion

The ASUS Z270-A Prime was the first Z270 motherboard we had up for testing. The Z170-A regularly found itself topping our graphs throughout the lifetime of the 6th Generation of Intel processors so we were excited to see what the next iteration brought to the table, as well as getting our first taste of the Z270 chipset.

Considering that we had it very early in the test cycle – and thus the BIOS was a particularly fresh sample – it performed very well in every test. Sure it isn’t likely to break any records but that’s somewhat missing the point. The idea of the Prime is to be the standard motherboard for people who want a good all rounder without breaking the bank on something that has more gaming or overclocking targeted features. It does overclock though, we just decided not to do a full batch of tests with the initial review just to save time with such short deadlines. We have since been back on a newer bios for a play and it managed to match 5.1GHz that the other boards did, so its more than capable of keeping your tweekers happy!

You would have to be exceptionally demanding to find fault with the Z270-A Prime. It has all the main Z270 features onboard, as well as enough dedicated AIO and fan headers to keep even the most cooling obsessed user happy. We really like the looks too. For a mid-priced motherboard it would be easy for ASUS to have gone down the route of providing just enough, but with the plastic that blends the IO portion of the motherboard into the power phase heatsinks the Prime looks like a motherboard costing far more than its MSRP.

If you want to upgrade to the Z270 chipset but haven’t a particular preference in mind then the Z270-A Prime is a fantastic choice, combining affordability with a well-rounded feature set and some good looks that particularly suit those of you who like a snow white system.
