ASUS Z790-A Prime WiFi Review

Introduction

The ASUS Prime has, for a long time, been the model we utilise to test any new Intel processor. It’s solid enough to be a fantastic baseline, it is usually found in white which we all know the boss likes, and best of all it’s a relatively affordable way to get on board with the newest chipset without having to spend the kind of money more usually associated with a model from the ASUS Republic of Gamers stable.

This generation of ASUS Prime motherboards has seem a slight shift in their philosophy. For a start it is no longer the stark white colouring of earlier models, but instead has moved to a light silver colour. This is something we don’t fully understand, as silver is everywhere but white motherboards are few and far between.

The other major change is that the design of the Prime follows that of the TUF very closely, and apart from the extra heatsink on one of the M.2 slots can almost be considered the white/silver version of the ASUS TUF, just for those of you who want to use DDR5 rather than DDR4. Enough preamble though, let’s get down to business.

Technical Specifications

The price point of the ASUS Z790-A Prime WiFi can be gleaned from the details of the specifications. A single PCI Express 5.0 slot for your GPU, but otherwise PCI Express 4.0 dominates, with even the M.2s being solely PCIe 4.0 affairs. The Power Stages are 16+1 60A offerings, but teamed, whilst the backplate has a handful of USB ports instead of bristling with them.
