MSI MAG X870E Tomahawk Review
Introduction and Technical Specifications
Introduction
In the world of business there is always a balance to be found between premium models and more affordable fare. If you’re a famous brand you unquestionably leverage your name recognition to sell expensive products to those who are flush with cash. But you also use the fame of the premium models to sell lesser, or at least more affordable, ones to everyone else. Selling in volume will always best selling five very expensive ones.
When it comes to MSI, their premium models fall under the MEG branding, and we’ve even seen their insanely gorgeous Godlike in the OC3D offices. The MPG iterations hit the midpoint of the market, whilst the MAG ones, whilst by no means bargain basement options, are their affordable ones. Certainly their affordable named ones at least. If you’ve been following along with our various motherboard reviews you’ll know how impressed we are by the MSI Tomahawk models. So impressive are they that we return to our first comments. Namely that when you’re trying to justify to the paying public why they should spunk over a grand on the Godlike, it seems counter-intuitive to produce a £324 motherboard that performs almost as well.
Of course those two specific motherboards are vastly different because the Godlike has some of the most glitzy, high-cost features around. It’s a monster. The point holds up though. Such is the consistency of modern chipsets that features like the OLED screen on the Godlike are where the differences lay. How does the X870E Tomahawk stack up? Let’s find out.
