MSI MEG X870E Godlike Review

Conclusion

Conclusion

Let’s get the performance out of the way first. If you’re a frequent visitor to OC3D you’ll know that we often discuss the consistency of modern hardware. The days when which motherboard you had really mattered are consigned to the history books. Yes there are differences at the very peak, and certainly different amount of headroom, but basically both Intel and, in this case, AMD, have refined their chipsets to incredible levels. All of which means that there generally isn’t much gain or loss to be factored into raw performance benchmarks.

Naturally though there are differences in temperature testing. The design of the power phase and how willing the BIOS is to push voltages around the shop is very much under the control of the manufacturer. If you felt that gigantic power stages are too warm for your blood, the MEG X870E Godlike is the very motherboard you’ve been searching for. The VRM readings on our Ryzen 9 9900X were so low we grabbed our Ryzen 9 9950X and still could barely get them to budge. Suffice to say that whatever your future plans, the Godlike won’t be a limiting factor.

All the Good Stuff

Where the Godlike is going to capture your attention is the stuff within MSIs control. The screen is glorious, being easily customisable and, most importantly, crisp. Naturally OLED screens can easily struggle with burn in so you might need to adjust what it displays, especially if you like looking at thermals on the regular, but out of the box it’s stunning. In fact if the ASUS Maximus Extreme hadn’t just come with an even more impressive screen we’d be making up new awards just for the Godlike. As it is, it’s the second best on-PCB screen around. The third best is so far behind it doesn’t even count.

The placement of that OLED display has meant the Godlike has the horizontal connection method. Unquestionably, by a massive margin, our favourite connection scheme. With the addition of MSIs own EZ cables – link, connection and front panel – it’s the ultimate platform for cable tidying obsessives. It’s also perfect for those of us too lazy to cable manage. You can’t get it wrong with the Godlike. If everything it plugged in, it will be neat and tidy. You can’t get it wrong.

If you’re on a tight budget, obviously the Godlike isn’t for you. Try the Tomahawk or Carbon instead. If, however, you want the best that current motherboard thinking has to offer, you’ll be stunned at how attractive and easy to use the Godlike is. It’s got it all. For giving you the ability to test out all the latest and greatest hardware innovations the MSI MEG X870E Godlike wins our OC3D Enthusiast Award.
