Far Cry Primal PC Performance Review

Every once in a while games need to take a bold step in a new direction, whether it be adding all new gameplay mechanics or simply taking the story of a game down a new and interesting path.

Lately several critics have stated that Ubisoft has been making far too many sequels, reiterating and re-releasing the same gameplay mechanics, graphics and stories over and over,  which has been very apparent with the recent releases of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Far Cry 4, both of which are very similar to the previous games in their respective series’.

With Far Cry Primal Ubisoft are taking a step back in time, to a time before firearms and a time where humans were not at the top of the food chain, taking the animal interactions from Far Cry 3 and 4 and making them the core of the gameplay experience.

When playing the game today I can say that it is a real looker on PC, offering the most beautiful landscapes and terrain that I have ever seen in a game, but many of you will be wondering what kind of hardware you will need to achieve these visuals on your PCs.

Let’s have a look at Far Cry Primal’s performance on PC, and see exactly how the games settings affect the games visuals.

Drivers

For this game we will be using the newest drivers that were available when the game released, which is Nvidia’s Game Ready Geforce 362.00 driver and AMD’s 16.2.1 driver, both of which became available to the public in the past week.

Test Setup

We will be testing this game on our dedicated GPU test rig using the current flagship GPUs from both AMD and Nvidia. Both GPUs will be the reference design and will be ran at stock settings.

To represent AMD and Nvidia’s Mid range GPU offerings we have decided to use the AMD R9 380 and the Nvidia GTX 960. Both of these GPUs will be the ASUS Strix models

Both of these GPUs offer very similar performance in most scenarios and come in at very similar pricepoints, so it will be very interesting to see which GPU will come out on top.

One thing to note is that for a limited time ASUS will be offering Far Cry Primal for free with ASUS R9 390 and ASUS GTX 970 and above GPUs alongside Hitman 2016 with AMD GPUs and Tom Clancy’s The Division with Nvidia GPUs. This means that you will get £80 worth of free games with ASUS when you purchase a new GPU.
