Steelseries Apex 7 Keyboard Review

Software

The Steelseries Engine is one of those software packages that is so easy to use you wonder why other offerings can be so byzantine. Everything is obvious, requires the minimum of clicks to sort out, there is plenty of prebuilt options but also lots of control for those who want something more specific. You can even set it up to automatically apply your changes so you can test them out before committing them to a profile.

Lighting is always something which can be super easy to set up – you just want one colour kthx – or can be mind-numbingly complicated if you want a more powerful setup. Thankfully the Steelseries Engine ticks both boxes by being powerful but also incredibly easy to use. For example, want your keyboard to have a gradient across it that also sends a coloured light across the keys when you press one of them, whilst also going into a spiralling rainbow to wow passers by when you’re away? Six clicks and you’re done. Maybe ten if you need to manually create the gradient. Yep, that easy.

The OLED display connects to apps and some games, but can also show you the element you’re changing as well as just having your own image if you wish. It’s both flexible and powerful. That’s a running theme from the Apex 7.

As always if there isn’t a prebuilt configuration or feature set up that you would like to have at your fingertips then the Steelseries Engine comes with fully featured macro editor.
