DOOM Eternal PC Performance Analysis and Optimisation Guide

1080p Performance

Our benchmarking location for DOOM Eternal is one of the most demanding areas that we could find in the game. With this in mind, we will note that general gameplay will offer much higher average framerates depending on your location. We tested DOOM Eternal is an area that’s remarkably close to our worst-case-scenario for the game while also offering a high level of run-to-run consistency. Our benchmark runs are then validated over three test runs, where framerate differences are often less than 1 FPS.

A note about 6GB graphics cards

DOOM Eternal’s Ultra Nightmare textures are only supported on graphics cards with 8GB or more VRAM. This means that GPUs like AMD’s RX 5600 XT, and Nvidia’s GTX 1060 and RTX 2060 only support DOOM Eternal’s Ultra Nightmare settings when using the game’s Ultra texture setting. This means that Nvidia’s GTX 1060 and RTX 2060 are running slightly lower graphical settings than our other graphics cards.

Benchmarks

At 1080p, DOOM Eternal is incredibly easy to run at 60 FPS framerates, with only our GTX 1060 failing to do so at 1080p Ultra Nightmare Settings. At lower graphical settings, 1080p 60 FPS framerates are possible when using this graphics card, as as you can see on page 3 of this analysis, DOOM Eternal looks great at these lower graphical settings, albeit not as good as Ultra Nightmare.

Another thing that we can see is that DOOM Eternal loves Radeon graphics hardware, with AMD’s RX 580 easily outclassing Nvidia’s GTX 1060, their RX Vega 56 outclassing Nvidia’s GTX 1080 and AMD’s RX 5700 surpassing Nvidia’s RTX 2060. Yes, our RX 5700 is a factory overclocked model and Nvidia’s RTX 2060 is a Founders Edition design, but that factor isn’t enough to explain a performance lead that large.

We can also see that DOOM Eternal loves modern GPU architectures, with Nvidia’s RTX 2060 easily surpassing Nvidia’s older GTX 1080 while AMD’s Navi architecture delivers a huge advantage over Vega.
