Dynamic Resolution Scaling

DOOM Eternal can experience momentary framerate dips, be it from a sudden explosion in already demanding scenes or especially wild combat arenas. DOOM’s Dynamic Resolution settings are designed to help bring framerates above 60FPS, or above any framerate threshold that the user desires. With this setting, PC gamers can achieve higher framerates at the cost of lower levels of graphical fidelity.

When testing our Radeon RX 5700 Red Devil from PowerColor, we noticed that DOOM Eternal already ran at an average framerate that’s close to 60FPS in most instances when dynamic resolution scaling is disabled. We hoped that enabling this setting would help keep framerates at levels which were closer to 60FPS, but sadly this wasn’t the case.

While framerates were closer to 60FPS than before, 99th percentile and 95th percentile framerates were not significantly improved. Perhaps this is because DOOM Eternal already ran at over 60FPS most of the time.

When continuing our testing of this option, we set DOOM Eternal’s framerate target to 70FPS. With that change, we were able to see much more substantial improvements to our lower percentile framerates. With Dynamic Resolution scaling being active more often, we were able to see better frametimes with a minimal loss in graphical fidelity.
