DRAGON QUEST XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age PC Performance Review

Can our GTX 960 and R9 380 Achieve 60FPS?

In our 1080p testing, we found that both our R9 380 and GTX 960 Strix graphics cards were able to run Dragon Quest XI at 1080p at 30 FPS, delivering a higher resolution experience than the game’s 900p PS4 version.

This made us curious about how low we would need to turn Dragon Quest’s resolution to achieve a steady 60FPS on these graphics cards, though sadly we found that only our GTX 960 Strix was able to produce a solid 60FPS framerate, requiring a resolution downgrade to 720p.

At 720p Dragon Quest looks awful, with plenty of visible aliasing throughout the game. Given the game’s turn-based combat system, there is no shame in 30FPS playback, making our recommendation with the R9 380 and GTX 960 being a 1080p resolution with a framerate target of 30FPS, or playing the game at 1080p with a variable refresh rate monitor.
