Fallout 4 High Resolution Texture Pack Review

With Fallout 4’s High-Resolution Texture Pack weighing in at 58GB, most gamers expected that this new texture pack would have a significant impact on performance, though sadly this is far from the truth.  

For the most part, textures quality is very similar, with changes only being noticeable in a side-by-side comparison. Below is a few examples comparing the quality of the game before and after the High-Resolution Texture Pack is applied. 

Below in is a comparison of Diamond City, with the difference in graphical quality only being noticeable when you view the comparison in fullscreen mode. Below there are relatively few placed what texture changes are noticeable, including changes in the texture quality of fabrics, and the quality of wooden items. 

These changes are very difficult to notice and are not as substantial as the upgrades provided by existing Fallout 4 mods. In these comparisons below, we will be playing the game at Ultra settings with TAA turned off. This is to minimise blurring and allow us to more easily see the texture improvements provided by the high-resolution texture pack.

Next we will be moving over to the city of Goodneighbour, taking a look at an indoor scene, where we can see that a lot of indoor items and textures close up. Here we can see that textures for weapons have been upgraded as well as the player’s armour and gloves.   

Looking at the staircase below and the other wooden features of the building we can see minor texture quality improvements throughout, though these differences are very hard to notice when using lower resolutions and FXAA or TAA.

There are some locations in the game where these are high-resolution textures are more noticeable, though even here the differences are difficult to notice without a side-by-side comparison.

Below we can see the exterior of vault 111, which sees some significant improvements in texture quality, making the vault’s textures look significantly less blurry.

This new texture pack does improve texture quality throughout the game, though it only makes a minimal difference in graphical quality. We can see below that the texture quality of the brick wall and several other areas in the environment are improved, though not enough to be worth an additional 58GB download.
