Gears 5 PC Performance Review & Optimisation Guide

1440p Performance – Benchmark Results

At 1440p the chart’s order remains mostly unchanged. That said, it is worth noting that AMD’s Radeon VII graphics card does manage to achieve a slightly higher average framerate than our Powercolor Radeon RX 5700 XT Red Devil. This is great news for AMD’s Navi architecture, as the RX 5700 XT is a much cheaper card than AMD’s presumer-focused Radeon VII.

For a stable 60 FPS at 1440p Ultra Settings, we need a Geforce RTX 2070 Super or a graphics card like Powercolor’s Radeon RX 5700 XT Red Devil. AMD’s RX 5700 XT gives the Geforce RTX 2070 Super a proper run for its money in Gears 5.

Like 1080p, AMD’s Radeon RX 5700 Red Devil offers performance that is neck and neck with Nvidia’s TX 2060 Super. This is great news for Radeon given the RX 5700’s RTX 2060 (non-SUPER) pricing levels. We can also see AMD’s ageing RX Vega 56 outperform Nvidia’s base RTX 2060.

While this game seems to love Radeon Navi cards, the same cannot be said for Polaris, with Nvidia’s GTX 1060 easily besting it in all of our performance charts. Both Navi and Vega offer much more competitive performance in this regard.

With GPUs like the RX Vega 56/64, GTX 1070/1080 or RTX 2060, we suggest turning Gears 5 down to high settings or turning on a Minimum framerate target of 60FPS. Either adjustment should ensure much more stable performance levels.
