Great, but not perfect – Nvidia DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction Review

Image Quality Comparison – Does DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction look good?Cyberpunk 2077 DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction

DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction Image Quality Comparison

Se we’ve talked about what DLSS Ray Reconstruction is supposed to do, but how well does it work in reality? To be honest. DLSS ray reconstruction is a mixed bag in Cyberpunk 2077. Yes, it does increase the fidelity of ray traced effects, but it also comes with a few downsides.

One of the primary downsides is an increase in graphical artifacts like ghosting and flashing, which can be seen throughout the Cyberpunk 2077. These issues prevent our impressions of DLSS 3.5 ray reconstruction from being exclusively positive, though future updates could address these graphical issues.

In some instances, we saw visual artifacts with ray reconstruction enabled in Cyberpunk 2077. Below you can see a strange outline on the oil wells in the image below, something that does not appear when DLSS RR is disabled. On top of that, we have seen more ghosting when DLSS Ray Reconstruction is enabled, and more flashing artifacts.

A significant visual boost without a huge performance drop

Below we can see the more positive impacts that DLSS ray reconstruction can have on Cyberpunk 2077. Below, see can see that the ray traced shadows from the barbed wire is much sharper, and that much more of the concrete road blocker has accurate ambient occlusion. Similar effects can be seen in most of Cyberpunk 2077, which makes the game look a lot better on PC.

DLSS Ray Tracing delivers its largest boost in visual quality when used with ray traced reflections. Below, we can see much more detailed reflections of the illuminated sign, and we can see that the newspaper on the ground has also received accurate ambient occlusion. Ray Reconstruction has given Cyberpunk 2077 a huge ray tracing quality boost. This change is a big deal given how DLSS RR does not increase the number of rays that need to be case, or have a large negative performance impact on Cyberpunk 2077.

Once again we can see the impact that DLSS Ray Reconstruction has on the quality of ray traced reflections. With DLSS RR enabled, we can see that both main screenshots in the image below are sharper and better defined.

This scene showcases the impact of DLSS Ray Reconstruction on global illumination, and how it can impact seemingly random areas of an image in a fully ray traced game like Cyberpunk 2077. Overall, Cyberpunk 2077 is sharper with DLSS RR on, something that can be seen in the scaffolding over the bar, or when looking at the man sitting at the bar.
