Great, but not perfect – Nvidia DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction Review

Introduction – What is DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction?

DLSS 3.5 arrives in Cyberpunk 2077 – DLSS Ray Construction has been added to its first game

Nvidia’s DLSS 3.5 technology has been added to its first game. Cyberpunk 2077 now features Nvidia’s full RTX feature set, which included full ray tracing, DLSS Super Resolution, DLSS Frame Generation, and DLSS Ray Reconstruction.

Unlike Nvidia’s existing DLSS features, DLSS Ray Reconstruction technology is primarily designed to increase image quality. Both DLSS Super Resolution and DLSS Frame Generation are designed to boost framerates. That said, image quality has always been a priority for Nvidia’s DLSS technology.

In this review, we will be looking at the performance and image quality impacts of DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction in Cyberpunk 2077. Unfortunately, the technology is more of a mixed bag that we expected, though we have found more positives than negatives to discuss.

A visual boost for games with ray tracing

Nvidia’s DLSS Ray Reconstruction technology is designed to increase the quality of ray tracing effects. This is achieved by replacing existing hand-crafted denoising techniques with an Nvidia-made AI-powered neural renderer. Nvidia’s technique is designed to preserve more high-frequency detail and to more intelligently work to deliver higher fidelity results.

With DLSS Ray Reconstruction, Nvidia technology deliver higher levels of graphical fidelity without increasing the number of ray casts required. In effect, Nvidia’s ray reconstruction technology is designed to deliver more with less. That’s great news for the future of ray tracing, even if DLSS RR is an Nvidia-only technology.

Performance gains? Not necessarily

While other Nvidia DLSS technologies primarily focus on delivering higher framerates, DLSS RR focuses exclusively on graphical fidelity. That said, DLSS ray reconstruction can boost the performance of some games.

In the image below, Nvidia showcases DLSS RR’s ability to boost the performance of some games. That said, elsewhere Nvidia has confirmed that the game will have a negative impact on the performance of some games. Either way, performance changes are on the minor side, and DLSS RR’s fidelity boosting nature should make this change worthwhile for most users.
