Up Close

PCSpecialist always give you every last screw and cable, as if you’d brought the parts and built it yourself. It’s such a lovely idea and makes those days down the line when you need to put another drive in, or just want to rejig some things, or even just splatter ROG stickers everywhere, a simple matter of reaching into the box. Anyone who has tried to buy some accessories separate from the main product will know how annoying that can be, and thus how great getting it all here with the Myrmidon I is.

As always with a PCSpecialist system the components are protected with the foam packet that moulds itself perfectly to the components. The days when your PCI Express slot and the weight of the GPU was at the mercy of your courier are no longer a concern.

As is often the case – ha – on modern systems everything looks very black, ensuring your RGB has the best backdrop upon which to work its magic. With glass all around the Corsair 500D the front lighting is just as attractive as if you’re looking at it from the side. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. What you really notice here is how carefully the system has been built, with nothing just thrown in. Of course at this price point we’d expect nothing less, but you’d be surprised how few companies take the time to make it look as good when powered off as on.

Normally the rear of a system is where we hide all our crimes, but the Myrmidon I demonstrates the attention to detail that we’ve come to expect from the build team at PCSpecialist. Every cable neatly stowed, everything clearly laid out, it’s a treat to look at and a stark reminder that our own systems don’t come close to looking this neat and tidy.

The CPU area is always the part of your system that catches the eye, particularly in these times of RGB lighting everywhere. The Myrmidon makes use of every last design feature from the Corsair RGB fans, through RGB DDR4, and the PCSpecialist cooler has RGB fans, an RGB logo, and has a chrome look which reminds us of the NZXT Kraken, guaranteeing plenty of eye-catching action.

The bottom half of any system is somewhat less aesthetically pleasing, if for no other reason than the amount of cables it needs to bring your setup to life. However, with an RTX to distract the eye and some careful cable management the Myrmidon does as well as anyone could realistically expect.

There are three Corsair 120mm RGB fans in the front to pull cool air into your system – which it does successfully as we’ll see later on – as well as looking the part. You can also see how carefully the cables have been arranged.

Of course the business end of any gaming system is the graphics card, and with an ASUS Strix RTX 2080 Ti installed there is no doubt that you won’t be left wanting in the polygon horsepower department.
