ASUS ROG Strix B760-A D4 and B760-G D4 Review

ASUS ROG Strix B760-A D4 and B760-G D4 Preview

Conclusion

Clearly if you’re purely here to see the performance differences between the various B760 motherboards then it would be easy to walk away disappointed that they’re all very similar. But that’s been the case for years, and if you haven’t realised it then perhaps you need to sit up and pay closer attention. In fact we’d go so far as to say that we love how consistent all the chipsets are. We definitely lived through the days where you didn’t really have a choice of motherboard because the specifications and performance were so close. Now you have true freedom to choose the model and manufacturer that best suits your taste, needs and budget.

The pair of white-but-actually-silver ASUS Strix motherboards we’ve shown in this review are nearly identical, with only the ATX vs mATX format providing the key differences. There are some fine details in terms of graphics, but either of them are so close in performance and feature set that you can go with the model that you prefer. There is something about a full ATX motherboard in your case that looks better, filling the gaps and such, but for most of us the bottom half of the PCB is left empty. You just don’t get multi-GPU rigs these days, and onboard audio is so good that few of us run dedicated soundcards either.

Even the IO section shows the same set of options on the B760-A and B760-G. The only real difference is the the Strix B760-A (the ATX one) has three M.2 slots rather than the two you get with the B760-G. If you’ve got enough money to populate all these slots then maybe that will be enough to sway you towards the ATX rather than the mATX, but if you haven’t then you could almost toss a coin. The only negative we really have is the decision by ASUS to move from white elements to silver ones. The market for white components is pretty large, as is the one for black components, but we can’t think of many silver pieces of hardware. It’s a compromise. People who like all-black rigs will find it too bright, and people who love the white aesthetic will be disappointed it is actually silver. He who seeks to please all will please none.

However, if you can get over that, and want to have a version of the ever popular ASUS Strix product line in your rig with all the benefits of the new Intel socket and chipset, either of the ROG Strix B760-A or B760-G DDR4 options are excellent choices and win our OC3D Gamers Choice Award.
