Intel Core i9 10980XE and ASUS ROG Rampage VI Extreme Encore Review

Test Setup

Both the Intel Core i9-10980XE and Rampage VI Extreme Encore will be used for the bulk of our testing, but we were also curious how well an existing motherboard would utilise the new boost speeds and so we’ve also run a set of stock tests on the original X299 Rampage VI Extreme. Our results pages will contain the motherboard result graphs first, with the CPU ones below. This isn’t indicative of anything with regards their importance, it’s just pretty clear that unless you’ve already got a Core i9-9980XE the Core i9-10980XE will annihilate whatever Intel CPU you happen to be running, so how it compares to any processor besides the TR 3960X should be obvious to all.

Overclocking

The combination of the Rampage VI Encore and the Intel i9-10980XE work very well together, able to attain 4.7 GHz across all eighteen cores. With today also seeing the launch of the 24 core TR 3960X it makes this the perfect opportunity to find out how much of a core deficit you can eliminate by having a faster clock speed. Memory performance is also very good with 3600 MHz on our DDR4. You could of course go with faster memory at the expense of a little bit of top-end CPU speed, but unlike processors improving your memory bandwidth doesn’t bring the same benefits in workflow speed, so we’ll stick with a fast CPU and good memory.
