Upgrading our games testing with Sapphire Pulse RDNA 4 GPUs

DOOM: The Dark Ages

DOOM The Dark Ages – 1080p-to-4K

As mentioned before in this article, we’ve updated our original DOOM: The Dark Ages PC review with data from our Sapphire RX 9070 XT and RX 9060 XT GPUs. Note that most of the performance data below comes from the game’s launch.

DOOM: The Dark Ages is an interesting PC release. The game cannot be played without ray tracing. Ray tracing is a core aspect of this game’s design, resulting in excellent lighting and much stronger visuals than its predecessor. While it does not run as fast as DOOM: Eternal, it looks great and runs well on modern GPUs.

Overall, our Sapphire Pulse graphics cards do well in DOOM: The Dark Ages. AMD’s RX 9060 XT consistently delivers near RX 6800 XT performance levels and beats Nvidia’s RTX 3070 Ti. Once again, the RX 9070 XT tops our performance charts.

1440p

At Ultra Nightmare settings, Sapphire’s RX 9070 XT Pulse delivers excellent performance without upscaling. For AMD’s RX 9060 XT, upscaling is required to achieve 60+ FPS at these settings. Sadly, this game doesn’t support AMD FSR 4, at least not yet.

4K

At 4K, even AMD’s RX 9070 XT requires upscaling to run at 60+ FPS at Ultra Nightmare settings. This is the same for all of the GPUs we have tested. Again, the RX 9070 XT is a chart topper. Yes, Nvidia has stronger GPUs, but we need access to those GPUs to test them. We can’t test what we don’t have.
