A Total War Saga: Troy PC Performance Review and Optimisation Guide

4K Performance in the Campaign Map and In Battle

Like most PC games, the hardware demands of 4K Ultra settings are too much for most graphics cards, even Nvidia’s RTX 2080 Ti. Again, like 1080p and 1440p, turning down MSAA will deliver PC gamers significant increased in performance, but come at the cost of increased aliasing. That said, at 4K aliasing is already heavily reduced.

For graphics cards like Nvidia’s RTX 2060, RX 5700 XT and RX 5700, stable 4K performance can be achieved using High settings, and a resolution scale setting of 80-90%. This will reduce image sharpness over true 4K, but deliver a much steadier framerate.

As always, Total War’s Campaign Map is significantly less demanding than the game’s battle map. Even so, 4K performance is low on today’s mid-range graphics cards. Reducing MSAA will increase framerates significantly, and moving to high settings will deliver further performance gains at a relatively low visual cost.
