Graphical Settings Comparison – Battle

The Total War franchise is designed with scalability in mind, being able to operate on systems with integrated graphics while also having the ability to bring ultra-high-end systems to their knees.

At the game’s lowest settings, A Total War Saga: Troy looks almost like a different game to its maxed-out counterpart, offering players vastly smaller unit sizes, significantly less detail in all areas and large amounts of detail pop-in. Even so, this allows A Total War Saga: Troy to run on incredibly low-end hardware. making it easy for fans of the series to get another fix of the series’ unique gameplay.

Medium settings upgrade A Total War Saga: Troy’s visuals in most regards, but it’s high settings arguable offer the best balance between performance and graphical fidelity.

With the game’s Ultra preset using incredibly taxing MSAA for Anti-Aliasing, the game’s high settings deliver visuals that are mostly identical with significantly higher performance levels.

Strangely, the move from High to Ultra is the only one which lacks an increase in unit sizes, with both presets using “Large” unit size settings. Larger “Ultra” and “Extreme” unit sizes are available, but these settings are only recommended for systems with incredibly powerful processors.

The addition of MSAA over FXAA reduced aliasing and increases A Total War Saga: Troy’s graphical clarity, but comes at a performance cost that’s too high to be considered worthwhile.  4x MSAA should only be enabled on systems with a huge amount of GPU overhead. It is a shame that TAA is not available with this release, as it was available in Total War: Three Kingdoms.
