An offshoot of Warhammer?

When we started playing A Total War Saga: Troy, we noted that the game lacked TAA as a graphical option, a feature which was added to the franchise with Total War: Three Kingdoms, a fact which has lead us to believe that A Total War Saga: Troy does not utilise the latest version of Creative Assembly’s Warscape Engine.

Feature-wise, A Total War Saga: Troy appears to be an offshoot of Creative Assembly’s Total War: Warhammer engine build, featuring many of the same mechanics and graphical traits as the Total War Warhammer series. This is not a bad thing and is something that’s common amongst Total War Saga titles. A Total War Saga; Thrones of Britannia used the Total War: Attila engine, which itself wasn’t the newest Total War engine of that time.

The nature of Total War Saga games demands a tighter focus and a shortened development cycle. This means that fewer resources are focused on engine-level upgrades, and more effort is focused on core mechanics and gameplay. Engine upgrades can wait for the next full Total War release.

Graphical Settings

PC gamers will have more than enough settings to bring their systems to their knees or run A Total War Saga: Troy on even the most mediocre of gaming systems. The game even has settings that stretch beyond the game’s Ultra preset, offering gamers Extreme Unit sizes and 8x MSAA if their system has enough CPU and graphics horsepower.

Most PC gamers should settle for Troy’s high preset and alter their settings from there, with the game’s low preset being best left for older gaming systems and laptop users. The game also has three benchmarks for players to judge their system performance, with two focusing on real-time battles while the other is focused on campaign gameplay.
