Unit Size Scaling – How it Impacts CPU Performance

While A Total War Saga: Troy’s Ultra presets deliver players large unit sizes, it is worth noting that the game as higher settings for Unit sizes. The game’s Ultra Preset uses Large unit sizes, but Ultra and Extreme unit sizes are also available.

Below, you can see the sheer scale of A Total War Saga: Troy’s Extreme Unit Size setting. This setting makes battles appear two times larger than the game’s Ultra preset, and significantly increases the size of armies.

When looking at the impact of Unit Sizes, we can see that our test system is starting to be GPU limited at smaller than large unit sizes. This reduced the usefulness of our testing, but we can clearly see how larger than Large unit sizes impact average framerates. In hindsight, we were foolish to not disable 4xAA when conducting this test.

When moving from Large unit sizes to Extreme unit sizes, average framerates dropped from 105.8FPS to 84.5 FPS, and 5th percentile framerates dropped from 93.6 FPS to 64.9 FPS. That’s a significant performance drop, though it makes sense given the shifts in army size.
