A Total War Saga: Troy PC Performance Review and Optimisation Guide

Optimisation Tips – All Settings Tested

Using Total War Saga: Troy’s Ultra preset as a baseline, we tested most of the game’s graphical settings to uncover their performance impact, finding that the game’s Anti-Aliasing settings were, by far, the most impactful on the game’s performance.

MSAA is a demanding thing, creating the need for more modern solutions such as TAA, given their huge computational requirements. This makes A Total War Saga: Troy’s lack of TAA annoying, as it would provide a good, performance efficient, alternative to no-AA and FXAA.

Aside from MSAA, A Total War Saga: Troy’s most performance impacting settings are Grass, Shadows, and SSAO, though none of these settings have performance impacts as high as lowering the game’s MSAA settings. There’s a reason why this game has no AA enabled at high settings.

Lowering Grass, SSAO and Shadows to high will have a notable impact on A Total War Saga: Troy’s performance. That said, the first cut that should be made for performance reasons should always be MSAA. There is a reason why almost no games use MSAA anymore.
