For Honor Closed Beta PC Performance Review

Conclusion

For Honor is a game that combines elements from many popular series, be it the one man army gameplay style of Dynasty Warriors when facing weaker minions with an almost Dark Souls Esque combat style when fighting one on one against stronger opponents.  

While playing the game’s Closed Multiplayer Beta over the weekend I was very impressed by how well the game performed, especially on lower-end hardware. Hopefully, these performance levels transfer over to the game’s retail version and single-player campaign, as I certainly would love to see a new release from Ubisoft which can run well on both high-end and mid-range components.  

With For Honor being a Nvidia branded title it is unsurprising to see AMD’s hardware bested by their Nvidia equivalents, with the RX 480 being bested by Nvidia’s GTX 1060 and AMD’s R9 Fury X being bested by Nvidia’s GTX 980Ti and GTX 1070. At Extreme settings, we see that the RX 480 and GTX 1060 are easily capable of 1440p 60+ FPS at High settings, with their higher end counterparts like the GTX 1070 and R9 Fury X easily achieving the same performance using the game’s Extreme settings. 

VRAM wise the game will not use more than2GB of VRAM at 1080p Extreme settings and more than 4GB of VRAM at 4K Extreme settings, allowing this game to easily be played on GPUs with lower amounts of VRAM. This is great news for those with older hardware, though it will be interesting to see if Ubisoft offers a “4K Texture Pack” after the game officially launches. 

At this time we simply cannot know how well this performance will transfer into the single player game, as the multiplayer component of most games usually offers lower graphical fidelity in order to offer enhanced (more stable) framerates when playing online.  

We will be conducting a full performance review of For Honor when the game releases on February 14th, though for now, the game offers great performance on a wide range of PC hardware configurations.
