Resolution Scaling (Does it work?)

Gaming at 4K is often more demanding than the resolution gain is worth, and resolution scaling features have become a popular way for developers to allow gamers to get more performance out of their hardware and meet their own performance targets.

With Mortal Shell, resolution scaling will allow PC gamers to achieve 60 FPS framerates a lot more easily at 1440p and 4K, though lowering scaling below 100% will result in reduced sharpness in-game.

Below is a comparison of a section of a 4K screenshot at 80% resolution scaling and the same shot with 100% resolution scaling. While the game is in motion, this difference becomes very hard to notice but generates a notable increase in framerate. With an 80% resolution scale, our average framerates shifted from 25.3 FPS to 40.6 FPS. While that’s far from a smooth 60 FPS, it’s not bad for an RTX 2060 at 4K.

If you need a large framerate boost at 1440p or 4K, resolution scaling is a great way to achieve that. Yes, the game will no longer be running at a true 1440p or 4K, but it will run a lot smoother.
