DirectX 12 vs DirectX 11 – AMD Polaris and GCN

AMD has traditionally had a better time with the DirectX 12 API, offering Async Compute support on hardware that is several generations old. This allows HD 7000 series GPUs or newer to use both DirectX 12 and Async Compute, potentially offering some significant performance boosts.

When using AMD’s RX 480 GPU we can see that both DirectX 12 and Async Compute offer performance boosts, especially when looking at minimum framerates. The boost from 52 to 60 at 1080p is a 15% increase, which is very noticeable in game.

When moving to older AMD hardware like the R9 Fury X, we can see that DirectX 12 can be vital to achieving high framerates. With the Fury X, we can see that DirectX 12 allows the R9 Fury X to unlock a lot of its hidden potential, offering a 10-ish FPS increases at both 1080p and 1440p
