Graphical Settings Comparisons – Low, Medium High and Ultra

Star Wars Squadrons is an incredibly scalable title, so much so that 100 FPS framerates were a common sight for us across seemingly all of the graphics cards that we tested. Better still, Star Wars: Squadrons looks good at its lowest settings, offering PC gamers an experience which is more than tolerable enough to use during long play sessions.

As a game which features relatively simplistic environments and distant details which amount to little more than the void of space, there is very little that Motive can do to lower the quality of Star Wars Squadron’s visuals in most situations.

At low, the largest cutback is in the Squadrons’ lighting and shadow quality, as most shadows are removed from the game to eek out additional performance on low-end systems. Thankfully, most PC gamers won’t need to use these settings, as any modern gaming PC should be able to play Star Wars Squadrons at 1080p 60 FPS at Ultra settings with ease.

At High settings, additional distant details can be seen on large in-game objects, and shadow details appear on smaller pieces of geometry. These shadows give the star destroyer in this image much more grounded appearance. At High, fewer details on capital ships draw in as you approach them, reducing noticeable pop-in.

At Ultra, Star Wars Squadrons’ lighting sees a noticeable upgrade, allowing more of the distant ships to cast shadows. These details give these ships are more realistic appearance and make their hulls seem less monotone and more detailed. Aside from the addition of a few more stars in the sky, there are few other noticeable differences.

Other changes will be seen in explosions are more particle effects are shown. Sadly, these effects are hard to capture in side-by-side comparisons.
