Wolfenstein: Youngblood PC Performance Review

CPU Performance – Core Scaling and the power of Vulkan

The words “CPU limited” have been said a lot in recent times, especially when it comes to gaming. While major strides are being made in the realms of multi-threaded performance, single-threaded performance has started to hit a wall.

Moving forward, efficient use of multi-threading will be a must for high-end gaming experiences, as single-threaded performance gains are not coming as fast as they once did. Thankfully, Wolfenstein: Youngblood’s implementation of the id Tech 6 engine makes great use out of all of the cores/threads that we can throw at the engine. Youngblood is playable with as little as a dual-core/quad-thread setup, though we will note that this configuration can present stuttering in some instances, leaving a capable quad-core as our CPU recommendation for stable gameplay.

Fans of 144Hz monitors will be glad to know that Youngblood can be easily played at this refresh rate and that this level of performance is accessible with today’s processors. Our 4GHz i7-6850K isn’t that powerful by today’s standard, but it can play Wolfenstein at over 144Hz.
