ASUS RTX 4070 Super TUF OC Review

Conclusion

The RTX 4070 Super is a great card if money is tight and you don’t plan to game at 4K. Or, perhaps rather, if you don’t mind turning some settings down to game at 4K. Obviously you have to already be a committed gamer to not grab the even more affordable RTX 4060.

Okay but what about the TUF?

Taken in a vacuum, clearly the benefits of this card when compared to the Founders Edition are numerous. The cooling is significantly better. ASUS excellence in their cooler design is in full effect here. It might not have the glitz and glamour of their Strix or similar models. However, under the shroud the PCB design and also the heatsinks are just as good as the more famous card. With a factory overclock and better cooling, the scores are a big step up on the Nvidia Founders Edition.

Unfortunately things aren’t taken in a vacuum. The MSRP for the Nvidia card is £579. We know that MSRP cards aren’t available for long, or in big numbers, but they are available. The ASUS RTX 4070 Super TUF OC is, wait for it, £725. Oof. The biggest problem with this pricing are the extant Nvidia cards. It’s a problem Nvidia have created. We said when the 4000 series cards were launched that Nvidia had fluffed the naming, and so it proves. Currently, although not quite this simply, there is the RTX 4070 at £549, the RTX 4070 Super FE at £579, the TUF here at £725 and the RTX 4070 Ti at £799. There are strong rumours that the Ti is now end-of-line and will be replaced, at the same price point, by the RTX 4070 Ti Super. Yes, we’re as confused as you.

This means the card below the vanilla RTX 4070 is fifty quid cheaper. The card above the Super FE is £200 more. It doesn’t really fit. Of course ASUS with the quality of their build and cooler can’t remotely bring the Super TUF OC to market close to the FE MSRP. It does leave it in a difficult place though. Too much over the FE Super, too little below a current Ti.

Don’t be in any doubt. It’s a fantastic card. The price and market segment problems are as much down to Nvidia and their approach to the Ada Lovelace card range as anything else. We wouldn’t often recommend waiting, but we think the whole Nvidia range will look very different in a months time.
