Corsair K100 Optical Mechanical Keyboard Review
Introduction
The Corsair range of keyboards has seen a lot of changes in the time we’ve been reviewing them. They started off as the Vengeance range, and that was adjusted to just be the K range. Since then, whilst some of the specifications and features have been played with, the build quality and robustness have remained legendary.
Until today the premium model in their range was the K95 Platinum. A keyboard we adored that had a whole host of features in addition to the build quality and typing feel of those famous Cherry switches. Today though, the king is dead and there is a new flagship model in the Corsair range, the K100 RGB.
The three big adjustments on this model when compared to the K95 Platinum is the move to OPX optical-mechanical switches, which bring the feel of mechanical switches with the blazing speed of optical ones, and the addition of Corsair AXON technology which annihilates previous responsiveness records, and an iCUE control wheel which puts the majority of the features beneath your fingertips.
Let’s cast our eye over the specifications before looking at the K100 RGB in the flesh.
Technical Specifications
Such has been the rampant success of the Corsair K series range, the majority of the features on the K100 RGB are familiar friends. Full keyboard size, excellent RGB lighting, pass-through USB, N-key rollover – allowing you to facesmash the keyboard and get every key of your despair into the chat window – along with the handy Windows key lock and programmable macros. Where the K100 RGB stands apart though is the addition of the their OPX switches, which combine the light touch, fast reaction of the very quickest switches around, with the solidity of a more familiar mechanical switch. Coupling this to the 4000 Hz polling rate possible thanks to the Corsair AXON processor you’ve got no excuses for being fragged.
Undoubtedly the most obvious new feature is the iCUE wheel which let’s you control a variety of features, with some of them embedded into the hardware and yet more options available within the excellent iCUE software itself. Media keys are all well and good, as indeed are custom macros, but getting all the features the K100 RGB has to offer able to be controlled without having some cliff notes stuck to the side of your monitor is where the real benefits are to be found.
