Destiny 2 Beta PC Performance Review

1080p Benchmarks

As usual, when benchmarking Destiny 2 we decided to use an area of the game that we found to be exceptionally demanding, which in the case of Destiny 2 means that the majority of the game will be played at higher framerates than this.

Even so, our testing methodology is designed to see whether or not our hardware is capable of handling games when the going gets tough, not in areas of the game where achieving high framerates is an easy thing to accomplish.

Looking quickly at this graph we can start to see that our benchmarking scenario is somewhat CPU limited, with both the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 achieving very similar minimum framerates. This shows us that when using high-end GPUs at 1080p that users will more likely be CPU limited than GPU limited, requiring users to invest in a CPU with higher clock speeds or performance per clock than our 4GHz i7 6850K.

At 1080p we can also see that the GTX 1060 Strix offers a lot more performance than our RX 480 Strix, which is the opposite of our 1440p results at the same settings. This shows that Nvidia clearly offers the best performance when running the game at lower resolutions, with AMD requiring a higher resolution/load to really stretch its legs.

The only two GPUs that we have tested that were unable to run this game at over 60FPS for the majority of gameplay are our GTX 960 Strix and R9 380, both of which offer very similar performance levels. Both of these GPUs are able to 60 FPS averages at high settings, which is great news for those who are still using older graphics hardware.
