Diablo IV PC Performance Review and Optimisation Guide
DLSS has many flavours in Diablo IV
Nvidia has been using Diablo IV marketing to help push their RTX 40 series graphics card, boasting that this game supports DLSS 3, which means that this game supports DLSS Super Resolution, Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing (DLAA), and DLSS Frame Generation. Below, you can see how DLSS and its many variations impact Diablo VI’s performance, and how Nvidia’s DLSS Frame Generation technology is a mixed bag in this title.
Let’s start off by saying that DLSS Super Resolution and DLSS Anti-Aliasing are great options for this game. DLAA provides more detailed images than Diablo IV’s standard anti-aliasing, and DLSS Super Resolution can be used to deliver higher performance levels within this game with a minimal loss in quality. At 4K, even DLSS’ Ultra Performance mode provided us with pleasing visual results.
DLSS Frame Generation on its own can increase Diablo IV’s framerates and make the game’s overall framerate a lot more consistent, but with framerates already being so high in Diablo IV, DLSS Frame Generation is arguably unnecessary for this game, though the game’s planned ray tracing update could change that.
When both DLSS Super Resolution and DLSS Frame Generation are used in Diablo IV, performance levels within Diablo IV are lower than when just DLSS Super Resolution is enabled. My hypothesis is that DLSS Frame Generation has issues generating such a huge number of frames at high resolutions, limiting the overall framerate impact of the feature. When framerates are already over 150 FPS at 4K, DLSS Frame Generation is arguably unnecessary anyway, making this a non-issue. We have seen this strange behaviour with all RTX 40 series graphics cards in Diablo IV. Performance gains are not what we expected when DLSS Super Resolution and DLSS Frame Generation are used together, possibly due to some kind of frame generation limitation at ultra high framerates.
