Ray Tracing On VS Off
Ray Tracing – Is it worth it in Forza Horizon 6?
Depending on the situation, ray tracing’s impact on Forza Horizon 6 can either be minimal or transformative. In many scenes, the difference is subtle. The vending machine beside the shop is lit by the shop’s lights, and the small bushes are more correctly shaded. The difference is small in most outdoor locations, especially at night.
For more internal locations, ray tracing has a larger impact. Bounce lighting completely changes the look of some areas, casting reflected light where the game’s standard lighting system would otherwise darken them. In areas like the bridge below, we can clearly see the impact of reflected light. We can also see the colour of this morning light impact the colour of the scene.
Below, we can see how ray-traced reflections can impact the look of Forza Horizon 6. In the puddle at the left of the car, we can see how buggy some traditional shadows can look. When driving through wet areas, the increased reflection accuracy is welcome. For areas with tall buildings with glass exteriors, the difference is very noticeable, especially in motion.
When travelling quickly, buggy and changing reflections can be distracting. With ray tracing, these reflections are more consistent and accurate, and for such a fast-paced game, the consistency is very impactful.
