Starfield FSR 3 Update Tested – Boosted Performance, even without Frame Generation

Conclusion

Starfield now runs much better on PC, especially on Nvidia hardware

Starfield has received a lot of updates following its 2023 launch, and these updates have improved the game’s performance on PC on ever hardware configuration that we have tested. This is especially true for users of Nvidia graphics cards, as they have seen their framerates increase by larger margins than equivalent AMD hardware.

With support for DLSS, XeSS, and FSR 3, Starfield players now have many ways to boost the game’s performance on PC. For Nvidia users, DLSS provides the best upscaling results. That said, our results show that AMD’s FSR 3 Frame Generation solution provides gamers with a higher framerate boost than DLSS 3.

While both DLSS and FSR 3 Frame Generation provide solid frame generation results, FSR 3 is let down by the fact that FSR upscaling provides notably worse results than DLSS upscaling. This is especially true when using lower input resolutions. While AMD’s Frame Generation technology is solid, it needs to be backed up by a better temporal upscaler to deliver results on par with DLSS.

FSR 3 is a solid addition to Starfield, and a great tool for gamers who desire the increased smoothness that only higher framerates can provide. With FSR 3, Starfield players can dramatically boost their framerate through Temporal Upscaling and Frame Generation. This makes high framerate Starfield experiences very achievable with the right hardware. That’s great news for gamers.
