VRM Temperatures – 3970X vs 3990X

Most of the TRX40 motherboards were designed with the 32 core 3970X in mind, and the results bear this out, with not much to pick between the two processors at stock. When overclocked though two things are instantly apparent. One, the Gigabyte is pretty handy but requires some active cooling on the VRM section to keep the temperatures stable. Two, the MSI we couldn’t get to work in overclocked mode on the 3990X at all. It didn’t warn about temperatures, or lock up, or anything. It just shut off. Regardless of what we did. The Threadripper 3990X is an extreme processor and requires an extreme motherboard to utilise it to its fullest.

Points to add: The MSI Creator would always do a full shut down the moment the 3990X hit load with any kind of overclock, even with all possible power restrictions removed or increased it would always instant shut down the moment any load hit it. It wasnt unstable like a blue screen it was a power limitation shut down that from our experience would only be able to be rectified with a less restrictive BIOS.
