Control PC Performance Review & Optimisation Guide

DirectX 11 VS DirectX 12 performance

Let’s start by talking about some oddities. Control wouldn’t give us the option to boot the game in DirectX 12 mode when using Radeon graphics cards with the company’s latest drivers.

In the release notes for Radeon Software 19.8.2, AMD did state that the driver offered performance improvements in DirectX 11 mode. This leaves us to suspect that AMD recommends using the older API with this game. DirectX 12 is mostly used as a means to enable raytracing within the game, so it makes sense that DirectX 11 mode is better, at least in some regards.

Below we have tried out all of our Nvidia graphics cards in both DirectX 12 and DirectX 11 mode. Almost all of our results showing DirectX 11 to be a clear winner. Unless you are interested in raytracing, we suggest that you stick to Control’s DirectX 11 mode. Head over to page 8 to see how DirectX 12 can impact Control’s CPU performance.
