Control PC Performance Review & Optimisation Guide

PC Optimisation Tips – All Settings Tested

When testing Control, we benchmarked all of the game’s graphics options to see which ones are the biggest performance killers. Below are our results.

MSAA

Turning down MSAA will have a moderate impact on performance at the cost of increased aliasing, especially when the game is in motion. Turning this setting down will result in a notable performance boost, but other options should be considered first.

Volumetric Lighting

Making changes to Volumetric Lighting will have a huge impact on Control’s performance, with changes to Medium and Low resulting in significant boosts in both Minimum and average framerate. This should be considered as the first setting to drop when you need better performance.

Global Reflections

This setting impacts non-screenspace reflections within Control. Turning this setting to Medium will result in a moderate change in Control’s performance while setting it to Off will result in a significant performance boost. We recommend setting this to Medium or high unless you really need the extra performance.

Far Object Detail (LOD)

In our testing, this setting has a minimal impact on performance and a significant impact on graphics quality. As such, we recommend keeping this setting at high.

Shadow Filter and Shadow Detail

These settings have a minimal impact on performance and should be kept at high whenever possible.

SSAO

This setting has a minimal impact on performance. Keep it turned on unless you really need the performance gains.

SSR Quality

Switching SSR (Screenspace Reflections) to medium will result in a notable boost in performance and turning it off will result in a larger boost to average framerate. We recommend keeping this setting at Medium or high, as it has a huge impact on the game’s visuals.

Textures

Changing this setting has a minimal impact on performance. Keep it at levels which are appropriate to your graphics card’s frame buffer size.
