Forza Horizon 4 PC Performance Review

1080p Performance – Benchmarking Results

At 1080p it anything above an RX 580 or a GTX 1060 6GB is capable of running Forza Horizon 4 at 60+ FPS on the game’s Ultra preset, offering enough headroom to perhaps increase the game’s MSAA to 4x while maintaining 60+FPS framerates.

Moving to lower-end graphics cards is where we start to see issues, with our older Radeon R9 380 and Nvidia GTX 960 graphics cards failing to achieve 30FPS framerates. Forza Horizon 4 is a VRAM hungry game, making the 2GB frame buffer on these graphics cards problematic. In short, both of these graphics cards require major settings reductions to achieve 30FPS framerates, something which we will look at on page 12.

Much like our 1440p results on Page 6, both the Polaris-based RX 580 and Pascal-based GTX 1060 offer similar performance levels, but things change when we move to AMD’s Vega graphics architecture, with the RX Vega 56 storming past Nvidia’s GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 while the RX Vega 64 blazes past Nvidia’s mightly GTX 1080 Ti. Forza Horizon 4 loves AMD’s Vega architecture.

Speaking of new architectures, we cannot forget about Nvidia new Turing GPUs, which also showcase a huge performance advantage over Pascal, with the RTX 2080 Founders Edition offering a huge performance advantage over the company’s GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition. In most older titles these graphics cards offer similar performance levels, making Forza Horizon 4 an exception, but the potential start of a new trend for modern PC titles.
