Graphical Settings Comparison – GTX 1060 VS RX 580

It says a lot about the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy that we have to run the game at a resolution of 4K to get meaningful performance data when comparing our GTX 1060 and RX 580 graphics cards.

Both GPUs offer a constant 60FPS framerate at 1080p, can deliver 1440p 60FPS gameplay at the same graphical settings, though at 4K we can see the Nvidia GPU take a huge performance lead over its Radeon counterpart.

In the graph below we can see Nvidia’s RX 580 move far behind our GTX 1060, though we can also see the impact of some of the game’s graphical presets, with the largest gap appearing between the game’s Ultra and High presets.

This performance hit is strange given the game’s almost identical performance at both quality settings, showcasing how expensive the game’s ultimately needless Ultra shadow settings are. It is also amazing how small the performance impact the move from Low to Medium settings is, given the fact that this setting turns on Bloom, Ambient Occlusion, Depth of Field and Fur Blur.

With this chart in mind, it is clear that the first graphical setting that gamers should lower is shadow quality, given its minimal visual impact and its N. Sane performance cost.
