DOOM: The Dark Ages PC Performance Review and Optimisation Guide

4K Performance

4K Performance

[Update – August 2nd 2025] Sapphire has sent their Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9060 XT Pulse graphics cards for games testing. This has allowed us to add AMD’s RDNA 4 GPUs to our recent games performance analysis articles. Data for these GPUs is now included below.

Like all games, DOOM: The Dark Ages becomes much harder to run when we crank our resolution up to 4K. None of the GPUs we tested could play this game at 4K 60 FPS without upscaling. That said, there are GPUs that are much stronger than Nvidia’s RTX 4070 Ti and AMD’s RX 7900 XT.

Most PC gamers will need to employ upscaling to achieve high framerates on 4K displays. Thankfully, DOOM: The Dark Ages responds well to upscaling, allowing us to achieve some huge performance gains.

Note that the performance of Nvidia’s RTX 3070 Ti tanks at 4K. This is due to its insufficient VRAM. Simply put, 8GB isn’t enough here.

With FSR and DLSS in Quality mode, both the RTX 4070 Ti and RX 7900 XT are pushed past 60 FPS in our benchmark scene. Lower-end GPUs will require more aggressive upscaling and some settings reductions to achieve higher framerates.
