DOOM: The Dark Ages PC Performance Review and Optimisation Guide

[Update – August 2nd 2025] Sapphire has sent their Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9060 XT Pulse graphics cards for games testing. This has allowed us to add AMD’s RDNA 4 GPUs to our recent games performance analysis articles. Data for these GPUs is now included below.

DOOM: The Dark Ages doesn’t feature a built-in benchmarking utility on PC. To generate the data below, we used a custom test area from part 6 of the game. We ran the game at “Ultra Nightmare” settings with a 2048 MB texture pool size. This made the game playable on all of the GPUs that we tested.

At native 1080p, it quickly becomes clear that DOOM: The Dark Ages is a demanding PC title. Even GPUs like AMD’s RX 6070 XT can’t play this game at native 1080p at Ultra Nightmare settings. Thankfully, some upscaling can claw back a lot of performance. Setting the game to high or medium would also notably boost framerates.

With DLSS/FSR set to Quality, steady 60+ FPS performance becomes more achievable on a variety of graphics cards. Even the RX 6600 XT and RTX 2070 Super can achieve solid framerates. With a VRR-compatible monitor, these GPUs can deliver a great gaming experience.
