Far Cry 5 PC Performance Review

Scaling to older hardware – GTX 960 VS R9 380

In our 1080p tests, we said that we would check to see if we could get our ageing R9 380 and GTX 960 GPUs to run Far Cry 5 at an average framerate of 60FPS or over, just to see what kind of visual sacrifice is required.

We found that moving down to normal settings was nowhere near enough to reach this performance target, so we decided to lower the game’s resolution to 900p, where our performance average was 60FPS for both of our GPUs. We chose not to reduce the game’s settings to low because of the huge visual impact it has on the game, so we decided to sacrifice visual sharpness to retail higher quality shadows, reflections and illumination.

While we are not getting a stable 60FPS, what we have here is a pretty reasonable gaming experience, especially if R9 380 users can find a cheap FreeSync display that can run with a 40-75Hz VVR/FreeSync range. Sadly Nvidia users are unlikely to find such affordable G-Sync offerings, which is a shame.
