Graphical Quality Comparison – Part 2

Closer to the ground we can see a much larger difference between low and Normal settings, with lower detail grass and foliage without much shadowing to add depth to the geometry. The lack of shadows around the plant life gives the ground a monotone, overbright appearance, which becomes more realistic at Far Cry 5’s Normal settings. This visual difference is one of the reasons why we don’t recommend playing the game at Low settings.   

What we can also see is some higher resolution geometry in the rocks in the medium distance, which is again highlighted by changes in shadow quality.

Moving to High settings we again see changes to the geometry of rocks in the medium distance, with a notable reduction in changes in the game’s level of detail when running across the world. At high we can also see a reflection added to the gun, showing off the bright orange sight nicely. Foliage appears to be rendered at a further distance, though it is hard to spot when the game isn’t in motion.

Moving up to Far Cry 5’s Ultra preset and we can see that shadows become slightly more detailed and that grass is drawn to a much higher distance, presenting a lot less visual pop-in while running through the game’s environment. This is most noticeable when looking at the hill in the distance beside the water tower.

At Maximum settings, we can see again that TAA reduced Aliasing notably, especially on the power lines and the water tower in the medium distance. TAA has a relatively small performance impact, but the reduction in aliasing it offers is a must for those that find sawtooth edges unappealing.
